Stretchers

Stretcher (painting looms) - a frame of profiled slats, usually rectangular, on which a painting canvas is stretched and nailed.

Larger stretchers use additional crossbars to prevent deformation of the outer slats. Wedges have also been used since the 18th century to help regulate the tension of the canvas.
